Histroy of Sabarimala Ayyappa Makara Jyoti:

Ayyappa Swamy or Sri Dharma Shasta was worshiped according to Tantra as his prime ritual. Swamy has told his parents that he will do tapasya for ending Kali (Demon) as a Bramhachari and he explained his avtara secret to his father. Since Shastavu is brought up as heir & prince of Pandalam Kingdom, many royal jewels were made for his Coronation.

Ayyappa swamy left for Forests to observe Nistura Bramhacharya like Lord Rama before coronation day. Thus he is called an incarnation of Lord Rama and gave Salvation to Sabari (devotee of lord rama in Ramayana) and made her as Sabarimalai hill.

Five days before the Makara Jyoti day the descendants of Pandalam Kingdom will carry Ayyappa Swamy Jewels and travel via traditional trekking path accompanied by Garuda for protection. Once Makara Star (Sirius) appeared in sky, he is decorated only once in a year with royal jewels and his intestity of cosmic radiance is shone as Makara Jyoti.

The Dewashom board with help of Thazamon Thanthri family members will light a Divine Fire known as Makaravilakku on top of Ponnambalamedu hill. This is collectively called Makara Jyoti & Makara Vilakku. Once Makara Jyoti puja is completed, Ayyappa Swamy idol is peformed with special abhishekam of Ghee and other items to pacify the lord’s powerful intensity.

Difference Between Makara Jyoti & Makaravilakku:

Makara Jyoti is appearance of the Makara Nakshatra star in sky. It is believed that Ayyappa will give darshan in form on star. Makara Villakku means lighting a divine fire with camphor, Silk & Cow ghee on Ponnabalamedu hill. Devotees need to understand that the fire appear on ponnabalamedu is lit by Travancore dewashom board. The temple will be closed on January 16th 2026.

Makarajyoti was observed on January 15th or January 14th every year.

Makara villaku starting time is : 05:30 PM to 06:45 Pm evening.

COVID 19 Pandemic caused severe restrictions for tourism and pilgrimage. Safety protocols implementation is observed strictly at all religious places. Sabarimala 2025 Mandala Puja Schedule will soon begin from 17th of October 2025. Group Booking is now allowed for all devotees and all covid 19 restrictions are lifted and sabarimala is now opening as usual.

To manage such a flow of adherent devotees Kerala police with help of Travancore Devaswom Board started Online Virtual Q system for easy darshan. Latest update from Sabarimala Official website is a new web portal was started independently by the board. Sabarimalaq.com was retired and now it was redirected to sabarimalaonline.org.

October Monthly Puja Temple Tickets are available to book from 1st October 2025.

November 2025 Darshan Q Tickets are allowed to register from 1st November 2025.

December Month Tickets are allowed to register from 24th November 2025.

Note: At present all the released Quota for December & January 2026 are complete registered by devotees. If any cancellations in previously booked persons will show green in availability for a small amount of time. Kerala State police department did not release any update about Additional Pilgrim Virtual Queue registration Quota.

Devotees who wish to visit sabarimala in deeksha or traditional way must book a free virtual token in online with sabarimala police website. Booking a Sabarimala online darshan ticket allows an easy entry at pampa gate during peak hours. Sabarimala temple this year is likely to attract 50000 people a day on average due to relaxation of covid 19 safety rules.

Devotees with previous logins in sabarimalaonline.org website can use it in new portal. If the user is a fresh login, then need to register with mobile number or email id.

During the registration process, user need to be completed 18 years of age and must have Voter ID, Driving License, Aadhar UID card, PAN card or Passport with 6 Months Minimum Validity.

One must enter his communication and corresponding address for proper communication and need to verify their mobile number with OTP authentication.

Sabarimala Virtual Queue Darshan Slot & Ticket Online Booking for Single Person:

After Login into your profile and Select Virtual Q Option in main menu. Now the application form will show as per below image. Select the Date from digital calendar option.

Select the Entry route for Virtual Q Passage. Three options are allowed to select. Pampa gate, Sabarimala Erumeli Traditional path, and Vandiperiyar route.

Give the required option for current booking. Single person for Self & Group for 5 members.

There is another option to contribute any donation for Pilgrim Welfare & Relief fund by Kerala Police.

If the profile has details of previous devotees who want to book this year darshan can choose Add Pilgrim option. If a new person is applying, Select Add Pilgrim option.

Enter Full Name, Age, Gender & Id card details. The entered ID card hard copy should be produced while visiting Sabarimala during Pampa gate Queue Entry.

Important Facts to Remember while Booking Sabarimala Virtual Q Darshan Tickets Registration:

Devotees & Ayyappa Swamy Maala Pilgrims should not carry Plastic packaged Irumudi Items like Rosewater, Ghee Packets, Turmeric & Safforn Packets etc. Plastic Water Bottles usage was also prohibited.

During the peak hours Sabarimala Hill can accommodate only 80,000 to 100000 devotees in 24 hours. Even during Makara Jyoti Darshan on January 15 3.6 lakh recorded was the highest number of pilgrims on Sabarimala Hill. Recently more than 20 hours of Waiting time is observed for Ayyappa Maala Dharana Swamis and 12 hours for Civil dress code devotees.

Some times, Virtual Queue reporting time is also expired because of parking or logistics issues. So Ayyappa Dewashom Board started New Queue Token system called Spot Q Token system for unregistered & Time expired devotees who visit sabarimala.

Devotees should visit Pilgrim information center in Nilakkal Busstand & wait for the Spot Queue Time slot Registration with their Aadhar ID card. Kerala Police will capture, Photo & ID details of pilgrim and issue the Entry slot for Pamba Queue gate.

Due to present Situation Spot Registration for Ayyappa Queue Entry is limited to 5000 persons only. Only Ayyappa Maala Swamys are allowed to register at Nilakkal & VandiPeriyar Centers. This is till November 24th or longer till the incoming of devotees returned to normal.

40 days from the start of Mandala Puja in month of November is a continuous celebration on Sabarimala. During these temple will be open at all days till end date of December.
